Procedures

At Surgery Center South, we are one of the most comprehensive outpatient surgery facilities in the country. Our center is uniquely equipped to perform many of the most common surgical procedures performed today.

  • Prior to your procedure, your surgeon and his/her staff will go over the informed consent process and answer all of your questions regarding procedure time, recovery time and arrival time at Surgery Center South.
  • You will be given instructions from your physician before your day of surgery. Please read your instructions carefully and follow any pre-operative instructions to make certain your surgical procedure can be performed as scheduled. Instructions will differ depending on the type of procedure or anesthesia you will be given at the time of your procedure with regards to what you may eat, drink and whether you can take prescribed medications.
  • Do not eat anything after midnight the night prior to your surgery. This includes chewing gum, mints, candy, and tobacco. You may drink clear fluids until 2 hours prior to your surgical procedure. Clear liquids are water, Kool-aid, Gatorade, grape juice, apple juice, cranberry juice, soda, tea, and black coffee. Do not drink orange juice, tomato juice, milk, other dairy or non-dairy products.
  • Take all of your medications at the usual time prior to surgery with a clear liquid. Continue blood thinners and Aspirin unless otherwise instructed.
  • Please let us know prior to the day of surgery if you take Coumadin. Bring all of your medications or a list of your medications with you on the day of surgery.
  • If you are a diabetic, your blood sugar will be checked prior to surgery. Do not take any morning insulin or diabetic medication. Check your blood sugar prior to arriving for surgery. Drink grape juice or apple juice to raise your sugar level if you believe it is too low.
  • Wear slacks and a loose short sleeve blouse or shirt that buttons down the front. Please do not wear make-up. Dentures may be left in.
  • Please leave all jewelry and valuables at home.
  • Please bring all insurance cards and an identification card with you on the day of your surgery. As a courtesy, Surgery Center South will attempt to notify you of your co-pay or unmet deductible amounts prior to your procedure by telephone or text message. It is your responsibility to work with your referring physician to ensure applicable prior authorizations or pre-certifications are obtained by your insurance provider prior to your surgical procedure.
  • Please have someone accompany you to drive you home. They will need to stay at Surgery Center South during your entire visit.
  • Please download the patient forms labeled “full packet”. Print these out, fill them out completely, and bring them with you on the day of your surgery.
  • A warm welcome awaits you at our front desk where you will begin the registration process for your surgical procedure.
  • Once all necessary documentation is complete, you will be escorted to a pre-operative area. This area is designed as a private and brief location so we do not allow you to be accompanied by family members or friends in this area. They will be asked to remain in the lobby waiting area or sit outside at the patio tables and benches.
  • The length of your surgical procedure – and the location of the operating suite in which it will be performed – will be determined by the type of surgical procedure you are undergoing.
  • A pre-operative health and safety checklist by your anesthesia and medical care team will occur in the pre-operative area. Once this is complete, you will be transferred to an operating suite for your surgical procedure.
  • When your procedure is complete, we will notify your family member or friend of your status and welcome them to join you in the post anesthesia care unit. This area is also designed for privacy and patient safety. Our facility allows one person to accompany you in this area while we are assessing your post procedure recovery.
  • The physician will meet with you to review the procedure and recovery expectations.
  • Discharge instructions will be reviewed with your family member or friend who has accompanied you. If applicable, follow up appointments with your primary physician will be arranged.
  • An advantage of choosing Surgery Center South for your outpatient procedure is the opportunity to recover in the comfort of your own home surrounded by family and friends.
  • You will not be able to drive within 24 hours following anesthesia administration or while taking pain medication.
  • Once you are home and settled our registered nurses will give you a call to check on your recovery within 2 days.
  • Please fill out and return your patient experience survey to let us know about your experience and how we can improve.
